MAKE WAY FOR LOWER MANHATTAN
Make Way for Lower Manhattan, a vision for the public realm and transformation of the most historic district of New York City, has now been officially launched.
Publica worked with BuroHappold Engineering as part of the project team which included the Financial District Neighbourhood Association, Massengale & Co LLC, WXY architecture + urban design, TransitCenter and Sam Schwartz Engineering and was supported by the J.M Kaplan Fund.
We undertook a public realm study of Lower Manhattan, studying the historic streets to formulate new ideas for better public realm connections between spaces, landmarks and destinations - including the Brooklyn Bridge, City Hall Plaza, Nassau-Beekman Street to Wall Street, Bowling Green and Battery Park. We were invited to present our findings and spatial ideas to a wide group of key stakeholders, which helped to unlock the next stages of the project.
The community-based report will inform the initiative to transform the historic neighbourhood, builds on prior studies and serves as a call to action to reimagine the Financial District and celebrate its unique identity.
