Hanover square public improvement scheme Commended at the 2023 nla awards
September 2023
Publica's Hanover Square Public Realm Improvement Scheme has been commended in the Public Spaces category for the New London Awards 2023, run by NLA London and supported by the Mayor of London. Publica’s extensive redesign of one of the West End’s most significant civic spaces transformed the square into a revived destination and garden oasis.
The awards recognise the best projects across different sectors in the built environment. It celebrates projects of varying scales across London that are making and will make a positive contribution to their surroundings.
The scheme celebrates the square’s intrinsic character and elevates visitor experience through increased pedestrian space, improved biodiversity and cycle infrastructure. Re-design of the routes crossing the square to an orbital path allowed the creation of a beautiful, retreated garden. A new public artwork by Sean Scully RA, celebratory lighting, railings with playable features, extensive seating and substantial planting create a quality space for visitors, residents and workers alike.
