OXFORD STREET DISTRICT UNDERGOES TEMPORARY TRANSFORMATIONS
The scheme of temporary interventions designed for the district will showcase innovation, sustainability, culture and diversity
Announced as part of a wider framework that will see the Oxford Street District undergo a total reinvention, the Temporary Public Realm Improvement Scheme includes a number of planned improvements, as a way of creating a renewed and rejuvenated space for residents, visitors and businesses to enjoy post-lockdown.
Among the planned improvements, which could be completed as soon as late Spring 2021, are:
– Footway widening, to provide more space for pedestrians to navigate the area safely
– Additional plants and greenery, enhancing the streetscape
– Custom-designed seating, providing more places to stop and rest
– Enhanced pocket spaces off of Oxford Street, providing sites for additional activation including cultural programming
– Interactive installations
– Concept lighting
Collectively, the interventions will support a safe return to the district is for visitors, and in turn, provide an opportunity to enable Oxford Street’s post-Covid recovery.
Each of the planned transformations will also inform longer-term ambitions for the area, feeding into Publica and Westminster City Council’s visions laid out in a framework document, also launched today.
As Design Guardian for the project, Publica will continue to oversee and shape the holistic design and delivery of the Council’s plan to strengthen the Oxford Street District’s iconic status as one of the world’s leading places to live, visit, shop and work.
“The planned interventions for the Oxford Street District are an opportunity to test new approaches and uses for the public realm on Oxford Street while enhancing the visitor experience and trialling the framework in action,” said Lucy Musgrave, Publica’s Founding Director.
“Now, with the pandemic having caused such huge disruptions for visitors, residents and businesses alike, we’re looking forward to exploring how the public realm of the district can support the 'new normal', and the first steps towards how the district can adapt and ultimately evolve into a place that better serves everyone who goes there”.
