TRANSFORMING THE PUBLIC REALM AT UKREIIF 2025
May 2025
What does it truly mean to care in property development? This week’s social value panel sessions at UKREIIF explored just that.
A Blueprint for Social Value: The Impact of "Giving a Damn"
“Great social value considers not just major infrastructure, but also the connective urban fabric between developments.” - Lucy Musgrave
Hosted by Places for London, Lucy Musgrave participated in a discussion with Cllr Peter Mason, Leader of Ealing Council; Sara Turnbull, Senior Quality and Design Manager, Places for London; and Lucy Atlee, Director of WorkWild; chaired by Grame Craig, CEO of Places for London.
Transforming Public Spaces: Driving Health, Investment & Sustainability in Real Estate
In this panel, Lucy advocated for more developers to regard the public realm as a core civic amenity.
She was joined by Daisy Narayanan, Public Realm Director, The Crown Estate; Matt Baker, Urban Regeneration Specialist, Rise Associates; and Phoebe Mangoma-Dennis, Planning Lead, Social Value Portal. Together, the panel addressed the need for more evidence on the impact of public realm interventions to enable data-based decisions and overcome systemic barriers hindering inclusive public spaces.
The discussion was hosted by Connected Places Catapult and chaired by Gavin Summerson, Head of Digital Construction and Infrastructure.
Transport Research & Innovation Grants (TRIG) Programme Showcase
James Lee, Director of CIC: Access and Inclusion, urged for transport infrastructure professionals to better integrate the voices of disabled people into every stage of a design at the TRIG programme showcasing event.
His overall aim is that "inclusion and accessibility are seen as a real business imperative, and not just a ‘nice to have’. It should be baked into our work right from the start.”
Hosted by Connected Places Catapult, and their Chief Executive, Erika Lewis, the event highlighted the incredible value of TRIG and its offer to some of the UK’s most innovative companies to help tackle genuine transport challenges.
