Publica was commissioned to design a series of landscape and lighting improvements at Eccleston Yards for the Grosvenor Estate, joining a project team including Stiff + Trevillion Architects and graphic designers, The Plant. Once an industrial yard within Belgravia, the site was redeveloped in 2017 - bringing restaurants, retail and leisure around public spaces. Despite these new uses , there was a general lack of awareness of the space within the local area and as a destination for visitors.
DAYTIME & PLANTING
During the day, the greenery of Eccleston Yards invites those walking past into the space. Secluded from the busy adjacent street, the diverse planting palette, a mix of shrub and herbaceous plants, brings vivacity and energy throughout all seasons, strengthening biodiversity within the area. Up-lighted planting enhances the long view of Eccleston Yard, maximising visibility down the entire path.
NIGHT TIME
After dark, the revitalisation of Eccleston’s lighting has improved legibility and reflects the industrial character of the space. Two new lanterns – inspired by the mantles used in traditional gas lights – breathe gently, announcing arrival at the yards . One lantern hangs above Eccleston Place main entrance, and the other, illuminates the entrance at Ebury Street. The strength of the lamp lights can be controlled using a mobile phone, providing easy maintenance from day to evening. These high-mounted lanterns address oblique and long views, publicising the once concealed Eccleston Yards. The design was developed with on-site testing, including full scale mock-ups.
Publica’s proposal draws inspiration from the yards’ industrial past, strengthening its identity and creating a unified sense of place at the entrances and across the site. Through this proposal, Eccleston’s functional lighting has been revitalised, and a mix of shrub and herbaceous planting increases the site’s sustainability and biodiversity. From day to night, Eccleston Yards has been transformed into a vibrant destination for both the local community and wider visitors.
