Securing the Future of London’s Theatres, Publica for Society of London Theatre
Client
Society of London Theatre (SOLT)
Location
London, West End
The report was commissioned by the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) to raise awareness about the specific operational and access requirements of London’s theatres. It is a call to action for early engagement and collaboration between theatre operators and those responsible for planning, designing, activating and operating London’s public realm and highways, and those planning and regulating land uses. It demonstrates that without active engagement and collaboration with theatre operators, London is at risk of losing these internationally renowned and valuable assets.
The report summarises the key challenges and opportunities identified by SOLT members during workshops in late 2019 and early 2020. The Theatres Trust and representatives from 49 London theatres attended workshops, with further surveys and site visits conducted between 2019 and 2021.
Publica carried out on-the-ground spatial surveys of SOLT theatres across London, mapping and photographing their access provision and requirements and interviewing individual theatre operators.
The report is aimed at landowners, theatre operators, local authorities, BIDs and the GLA and recommends policies and strategies to protect Theatreland’s distinct identity and support theatres’ extended and mixed uses.
