CONTEXT
Publica CIC worked with Greater Manchester Moving on ‘Right to the Streets’, a project working toward reducing violence against women and girls in public space by creating inclusive, active streets in Trafford.
The programme was founded on the principle that everyone has a role to play to make our streets, parks and public spaces more safe, joyful and welcoming - and that this is critical to enable healthy, happy, active lives for all.
Publica CIC was appointed for its expertise to ensure that the programme was built on solid evidence and leading practice, and to act as a critical friend for all project partners. The whole-system approach invited communities and cross-sector organisations acting at different scales (from individual action to policy change) to work alongside each other and share their unique insights, relationships, resources and influence.
This project amalgamated in a series of outputs, all of which championed an evidence-based approach to combine local experience with global best practice.
PROCESS AND RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
Literature Review Postcards
Drawing on Greater Manchester Moving’s gender and mobility insights, Publica’s expertise, case studies and academic articles, the literature review outlines the core principles and challenges of gender inclusive urban design and provides the framework underpinning all of the programme’s workstreams. The review equips project partners and the wider community with information, in-depth knowledge and a multifaceted perspective to better understand public space through a gender lens.
The starting point was intersectional: the work supports users to think across difference and acknowledge the different forms of power that intersect in the spaces we inhabit, dwell in and move through – thereby creating different experiences that need to be taken account of.
The literature review is divided into three key themes:
1. Living an active Life
2. Living a safer life
3. Living where I belong
Each key theme is presented in the form of information postcards, providing practical tools to plan and design gender inclusive public spaces and can be used as starting points for discussion, reflection and action.
Interviews, Blogs and Infographics, 2023
Interviews, Blog Posts and a suite of Infographics were produced to accompany the Right To The Streets Podcast, covering topics such as active lives, culture and nightlife, and public health. Interviews focus on insights and best practices from experts who are engaged with the Manchester community. The infographics distil topics discussed in each podcast episode and weave together statistics with illustration to create an accessible, informative guide to inspire action.
“this programme has been about enabling people to act joyfully and confidently around topics that can sometimes feel distressing and complicated. It’s been about creating resources that allow people to connect to and express what they already know about how gender-based exclusion works. It has been about amplifying what is already working in communities to develop actions that reflect their own needs, strengths, and passions. We couldn’t be prouder to have contributed to and learnt from this incredible community in Trafford.”
ELLIE COSGRAVE, DIRECTOR OF PUBLICA CIC
Games, 2023
Publica CIC produced and play-tested a series of games and activities to help empower project partners, designers, planners, policy makers and the wider community with in-depth knowledge to understand public space through a gender lens. Using challenge statements and tools, the games build participant expertise by:
Workshops, 2023
Games were tested and delivered with different audiences through workshops and guidance developed by Publica CIC. A fundamental principle of the CIC is to work iteratively, listening and learning from the lived experiences of those engaged and adapting our decisions and behaviours accordingly. This is essential in our mission of making a positive difference to women, girls and gender diverse people’s lives. The resources will continue to nourish this conversation, keeping it alive in social consciousness.
