COMMUNITY WEALTH BUILDING AND INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT BY PUBLICA AND VOLTERRA
July 2024
There is an industry-wide consensus for a more ambitious inclusive vision for our cities and communities. We know how to act to ensure our cities are sustainable, resilient and just – putting communities at the centre of the new urban agenda, but this requires new, practicable skills.
Publica and Volterra have been demonstrating this new skillset through a series of successful high-quality, impactful programmes for landowners, local councils and community organisations. New development and existing communities can be integrated through an inclusive and principle-led approach pioneered by Publica and Volterra.
On 2nd July, Publica and Volterra hosted a launch event for clients, collaborators and friends, at Publica’s new office above Smithfield’s Market, overlooking the new London Museum, to share a new interdisciplinary partnership that combines urban design and qualitative research with socioeconomics and quantitative research. The event aimed to highlight our joint achievements over a decade of collaboration and present opportunities in community wealth building for public and private sector partners.
Our work recognises, measures and shares the value of people, places and the networks that connect them. This enables us to build evidence for inclusive and participatory urban change that can then be clearly communicated. Publica and Volterra believe it is vital to prioritise local communities from the outset and we support urban development that invests in and contributes to them.
We take a holistic approach to understanding urban change, recognising that the most complete and grounded analysis needs to be participative and reflect the communities and users of a place.
The launch featured four short speeches delivered by speakers from both organisations: Publica’s Founding Director Lucy Musgrave, Publica Director Anna Mansfield, Volterra Director Ellie Evans, and Hugh Bullock, Former Chairman of Gerald Eve LLP.
Attendees at the launch praised the insightful conversations and opportunity to learn about this impactful collaboration: “ ‘How does every aspect of a project deliver public benefit?’ - that was the question that Hugh Bullock suggested that we should be asking at the start of every development to ensure that we look at value creation through the right lens at the launch of Publica and Volterra’s new partnership approach to ‘Community wealth building and inclusive development’ for complex urban projects.” said Nick McKeogh, Chief Executive and Co-Founder of the NLA.
