HEART OF LONDON PLACESHAPING STRATEGY SHORTLISTED FOR 2020 PLANNING AWARD
FLORAL COURT FEATURED IN NEW LONDON QUARTERLY
A TEAM LED BY PUBLICA HAS BEEN SHORTLISTED FOR THE BIRMINGHAM SMITHFIELD MARKET COMPETITION
Publica, working with Alejandro Echeverri; Shigeru Ban Architects; Waugh Thistleton Architects; AKT II; Doshi Levien and Nigel Dunnett, has been shortlisted in a competition run by Birmingham City Council and Lendlease to find a design-led team for the new Market at the heart of the ambitious Birmingham Smithfield development – one of the largest and most exciting city centre regeneration opportunities in Europe.
The project will create a new destination in the heart of the city centre, including new cultural and leisure attractions, lively retail markets and spaces for new and existing small businesses, as well as a residential neighbourhood with a high-quality public realm and integrated public transport links to the wider city centre. The competition attracted 75 entries from around the world, of which just five have made the shortlist.
LONDON FESTIVAL OF ARCHITECTURE 2019: BOND STREET AND THE RIVER THAMES
Last week, Publica enjoyed participating in the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) by leading two walking tours.
The first, a day time walk down iconic Bond Street on 26th June was an opportunity to share the results of the recently completed public realm improvement project, designed by Publica for Westminster City Council.
In contrast, the second walk took place at nightfall along the River Thames on 27th June and involved taking a closer look at the evolution of urban and social conditions that have shaped development alongside it.

BOND STREET SHORTLISTED FOR NEW LONDON ARCHITECTURE AWARDS
The Bond Street public realm improvement project has been shortlisted in the category of ‘Public Spaces’ for the 2019 New London Architecture (NLA) awards.
The NLA awards recognise projects across 14 sectors of the built environment that contribute towards making London a better city for all to live, work and move around.

LUCY MUSGRAVE APPOINTED TO NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN GROUP
Lucy Musgrave has been appointed to the National Infrastructure Commission’s new design group.
Chaired by dRMM Founding Partner Sadie Morgan, the design group will champion design excellence in national infrastructure, ensuring that high-quality design is considered at the outset and throughout delivery of major projects.

NEW YORK CITY MAYOR DE BLASIO INCLUDES MAKE WAY FOR LOWER MANHATTAN IN NEW SUSTAINABILITY PLAN, ONENYC
Make Way for Lower Manhattan, a vision for the transformation of the Financial District in New York City, is included in Mayor Bill De Blasio’s new sustainability plan, 2019 OneNYC.
The strategic plan aims to increase mobility on the City’s streets and, in light of the vision, sets the agenda to examine options for creating new pedestrian priority spaces in Lower Manhattan.
Publica worked with BuroHappold Engineering and the Financial District Neighbourhood Association to set the vision to transform this historic district.

The CIHT awards celebrate remarkable achievements within the transportation and highways industry. The winner will be announced in an award ceremony on 13th June 2019.

WESTMINSTER CABINET APPROVES OXFORD STREET DISTRICT PLACE STRATEGY AND DELIVERY PLAN
ANNA MANSFIELD AND EMMA BRUNSKILL-POWELL PRESENT RESEARCH FINDINGS AT NEIGHBOURHOOD PLANNING CONFERENCE
Publica’s Director of Strategy and Research Anna Mansfield and Researcher Emma Brunskill-Powell presented findings from their latest research at the Neighbourhood Planners.London conference, ‘Neighbourhood Planning in London – What Next?’, on 21st March.
Neighbourhood Planners.London commissioned Publica to investigate the spread of neighbourhood planning in disadvantaged areas in London, and issues affecting its potential growth. The research is currently being concluded and will be made publically available in the coming months.
LUCY MUSGRAVE ATTENDS WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF CHARTERED ARCHITECTS 30th ANNIVERSARY
On 12th February, the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects hosted an annual banquet at Draper’s Hall to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the granting the Livery in 1988. The Company gave 30 special awards to individuals and organisations in recognition of their exemplary contribution to architecture and the public realm. Lucy Musgrave and Publica’s work was recognized in this special award.
PUBLICA ATTENDS NIGHT TIME COMMISSION LAUNCH OF REPORT, ‘THINK NIGHT’
On 31st January, the Night Time Commission (NTC) launched its new report, ‘Think Night: London’s Neighbourhoods from 6pm to 6am.’
Lucy Musgrave sits on the Night Time Commission board and over the past year of the Commission’s inquiry, Publica has put forth a set of recommendations to enhance the city at night and has led the debate on civic amenity, issues around movement and biodiversity, and promoting a broader definition of evening and nighttime.
The recommendations include lighting strategies, legibility and wayfinding after dark, the development of a night strategy specific to the River Thames and the support of social and cultural infrastructure at night.
The NTC has been appointed by the Mayor of London in order to help realise his vision of London as a 24-hour global city, and Publica is delighted to contribute its expertise in culture and nightlife to redefine evening and night time in the city.

LUCY MUSGRAVE TALKS AT CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS’ ARCHITECTURE SOCIETY
On 29th January, Lucy kicked off Central Saint Martins’ Architecture Society’s new lecture series, ‘London’s Future,’ by giving a talk about Publica’s approach to urban design to a group of undergraduate and postgraduate architecture students.
In her talk, Lucy sketched Publica’s field of practice that emphasizes an evidence-based approach to studying the public realm and recognises the city both as driven by continual renewal and embedded with symbolic value. Lucy spoke about her Colombian study trips and the importance of international precedents in informing urban design, and highlighted the request to place Publica’s work and methodology in an international conversation.

GRACE CATENACCIO SPEAKS AT LOCAL GOVERNMENT ASSOCATION’S ‘CREATING BETTER TOWNS’ MASTERCLASS
On 17th January, Publica Projects Director Grace Catenaccio presented at a masterclass organised by the Local Government Association (LGA) on the theme of ‘Creating Better Towns.’ With an audience of over 20 local authority officers and councillors from around the world, Grace spoke about Publica’s urban design methodology, which seeks to understand the constant flux of cities, towns and neighbourhoods through an evidence-based, multi-dimensional approach to the public realm.
In light of the debate around the future of town centres and high streets, Grace argued that understanding the interrelationship of use, movement and culture in urban design is fundamental to creating a strong public realm that responds to the complexity and uniqueness of place.
BOND STREET PUBLIC REALM IMPROVEMENTS OFFICIALLY COMPLETED
VICKY WäGNER PARTICIPATES IN SOM’S PANEL DISCUSSION ON THE FUTURE OF PUBLIC SPACE
Vicky Wagner was joined by Urban Land Institute’s Elizabeth Rapoport, New York City-based artist Sean Vegezzi, and SOM’s Daniel Ringelstein in a panel discussion moderated by Guardian Cities’ editor Chris Michael. Hosted by SOM, an architecture and urban planning firm, at the London Review Bookshop, the panelists discussed the varying levels of access that define public space in cities and also added nuance to the understanding of privately versus publically-owned space. Vicky argued for the importance of custodianship in ensuring the longevity of places and discussed how Publica’s evidence-based methodology informs the way that we come to know different scales of space.

On September 20th, Lucy Musgrave spoke at the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects (WCCA) Installation Lunch, which celebrated the inauguration of Barry Munday as Master. As the WCCA’s chosen theme for the year is Culture and the City, Lucy spoke about the tremendous change the City and its fringe has undergone in recent decades and the importance placed on culture and connectivity in City policy.
